TEDxDayton Announces Speakers and 2021 Event Details

October 25, 2021 (DAYTON, Ohio) — The lineup of speakers for this year’s TEDxDayton Signature Event have been announced. This free event will take place virtually on Tuesday, December 14 and Thursday, December 16 from 7-8:30 p.m.

Over the course of two evenings, 14 local speakers will give talks to share the TEDx spirit of ideas worth spreading. All the speakers auditioned earlier this year and were chosen by the Speakers Committee.

“Last year, we hosted our first ever virtual TEDxDayton Signature Event and learned a lot – especially that the Dayton community will support virtual events like ours,” said Bridget Hutt, Signature Event Committee Co-Chair. “We look forward to bringing this year’s ideas worth spreading directly into people’s homes once again.”

This year’s speakers and their talk titles are:

  • Alex Everett – You Know You’re Dating Your Hairstylist, Right?
  • Ernest Stockton – An Earnest Approach to Recidivism
  • Faheem Curtis-Khidr – Black Leadership in Higher Education: A Call to Action and Equity
  • Jen Burns – Lettuce Talk About Food Waste
  • Josh Sweigart – Local News Is BREAKING… And Why You Should Care
  • Kami Anderson – “Molón de Idiomas” Language Swag in the Foreign Language Classroom
  • Karla Hollencamp – From Widow to Willow
  • Lindsay Ryan – Phone Lines Are Lifelines
  • Mark Bailey – I Need to Speak to Your Manager
  • Marsha Danzig – Flamenco Is My Fight
  • Mary Baldino – We Just Want to Play! What It’s Like for Women in eSports
  • Miri Lader – Making Room for Trust in the Doctor/Patient Relationship: It Just May Save Us
  • Ryan Ivory – Being Black Is a Pre-Existing Health Condition
  • Umesh Haritashya – The Wonder of Satellites: Real-World Applications

“With concern surrounding the ongoing pandemic, TEDxDayton 2021 will revisit a virtual event format, but just like last year, the impact of our speakers’ talks will resonate just as powerfully with the Dayton community,” said Brenden Wynn, Signature Event Committee Co-Chair. “We look forward to providing another free, virtual event thanks to our partners.”

Additional streaming details and performer names will be announced soon. More information about the speakers, updates about the event, and more are available at TEDxDayton.com.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, often in the form of short talks delivered by leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED conferences, intimate TED Salons and thousands of independently organized TEDx events around the world. Videos of these talks are made available, free, on TED.com and other platforms. Audio versions of TED Talks are published to TED Talks Daily, available on all podcast platforms.

TED’s open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; TEDx, which licenses thousands of individuals and groups to host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities; The Audacious Project, which surfaces and funds critical ideas that have the potential to impact millions of lives; TED Translators, which crowdsources the subtitling of TED Talks so that big ideas can spread across languages and borders; and the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED also offers TED@Work, a program that reimagines TED Talks for workplace learning. TED also has a growing library of original podcasts, including The TED Interview with Chris Anderson, WorkLife with Adam Grant, Far Flung with Saleem Reshamwala and How to Be a Better Human.
